1968 Civil Rights

The 1968 Civil Rights Act (CRA) is also known as the Fair Housing Act. It was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson as a follow-up to the previous civil rights acts of 1964 and of 1866. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was created to prohibit discrimination in housing; however, there were no provisions for federal enforcement included. Therefore, an individual who broke this law had no fear of punishment. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 created some punishments and the Act of 1968 expanded the definition of fair housing to include the prohibition of discrimination during the sale, rental, and financing of housing, based on race, religion, and national origin. It was amended again in 1974 to include sex and in 1988 to protect the handicapped and families with children.
