Age discrimination can take many forms. Some of the most common exist in the workplace and in access to organizations and activities in the public arena. Less obvious are laws which once disenfranchised other areas of the population and secondarily abused the rights of older Americans. Those laws were overturned in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which protected minorities from disenfranchisement under earlier state laws. That law was updated to include a portion indirectly addressing an age discrimination act 2006. The Voting Rights Act of 2006 eliminated the ability of any state to enact voting laws limiting the rights of any race or class of people. Specifically, literacy tests had previously been legislated to stop blacks and poor whites from voting in certain, often southern, states. Indirectly, that may have prevented some older Americans or older immigrants from voting. As a result, the age discrimination act 2006, as a result of the Voting Rights Act of 2006, removed those discriminatory restrictions.
