Black Civil Rights

Black civil rights generally refers to a movement that took place during the 1950s and 60s. African Americans were tired of segregation- a separation of racial groups in daily life- and felt that the time was right to demand change. For example, before the movement, individuals of color were not allowed to eat at the same restaurants, drink from the same water fountains or even attend the same schools as white Americans. Some state even created "anti-miscegenation" laws, which prohibited interracial marriages. Though not all of the laws were backed by actual legislation, vigilante justice groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan would ensure that blacks and white stayed separated.
