Civil Rights Movements

Civil rights movements have long been a way for minority groups to assert their needs for freedoms and rights. They have occurred all over the globe and often result in social change. Minorities have been based on race, class, religion, gender, sexual preference, and political beliefs. In Ireland, a struggle has existed between the Catholics and Protestants for years. Afghani women are currently protesting oppressive family laws that condone marital rape. Moreover, even on the west coast of the United States, homosexual individuals are arguing that they need the basic right to marry whom they choose, despite negative legislation.
