Civil Rights Suit

The civil rights suit, known simply as the Civil Rights Cases, is perhaps one of the best known in the history of the United States. In 1883, the Supreme Court combined five different cases into one issue to review. The question that was to be answered was whether the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which affirmed the equality of all persons in the enjoyment of transportation facilities, hotels, inns, theaters and places of public amusement, violated the 10th Amendment. This amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteed that all powers not granted to the national government would be passed down to the state or the people. The conclusion that was reached after the trial was that private acts of racial discrimination were not punishable by the federal government.
