Disabilities Discrimination

For the more than 40 million disabled individuals currently living in the United States, disabilities discrimination is often a daily obstacle. To help combat these struggles, the United States Senate passed the Americans with Disabilities Act. This act protects those living with disability from discrimination in the workforce, ensures access to public buildings, and guarantees accessible public transportation. This act covers individuals who have a mental or bodily impairment that prevents or limits them from participating in daily activities, such as accessing public facilities or holding gainful employment.

Fast Facts

  • Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, employers are required to accommodate, within reason, the special needs of a disabled employee.
  • As the baby boomer generation ages, the number of disabled is expected to increase at a steady rate for the next thirty years, placing strain on the already overworked disability services.
