Discrimination And Housing

Discrimination and housing is a significant concern that also has an important legal bearing. When housing transactions are made, housing providers may need to screen potential buyers before making a choice. In the housing process, tenant screening is an entirely normal and even necessary step, but unlawful discrimination can sometimes come into play as well. According to the law, although housing providers can screen tenants, they cannot make decisions based on discriminatory criteria. Refusing rent, lease, or purchase because of race, religion, sex, marital status, or disability is strictly prohibited. In addition to refusing rent, it is also unlawful for housing providers to harass tenants, deny proper accommodations, cancel an agreement, or make any other actions because of prejudice reasons. Lawsuits can result from cases where this occurs, and guilty providers are subject to legal penalty. Groups and organizations such as HUD and local housing agencies can offer legal assistance in resolving discrimination and housing related problems.
