Discrimination In Workplace

The Equal Pay Act of 1963 states that male and female employees working at the same position should receive the same amount of compensation. However, almost forty years later, this act has yet to become universal and compensation discrimination in workplace settings is commonplace. In 2008, women in the United States earned on average $638, while men earned $798 in comparable positions. It is predicted that women and men will not earn equal compensation until the year 2050, which will be almost one hundred years after the original Equal Pay Act was signed into law.

Fast Facts

  • U.S. women make, on average, 78% of the wages of fellow male workers.
  • Several factors have been attributed to the pay gap between male and female workers including a lack of female competitiveness and an inclination to undervalue female contributions.
