Discrimination of housing by landlords or other housing providers denies a tenant their right to housing, and thus is illegal according to federal housing laws. A legislation known as the Civil Rights Act of 1968 prohibits this as well as other types of discrimination from taking place in the United States. Usually, this type of discrimination involves a housing provider who, for discriminatory reasons, refuses to sell or rent a home to the person who has requested to. As the owner, housing providers are given liberty to pick and choose who the property will be granted to, but only if a valid reason is found. According to the Civil Rights Act, even after an agreement has been made, actions such as harassment that occur because of a person's race, sex, age, religion, or disability are also considered discrimination.
