Home Discrimination

Home discrimination is a type of discrimination that may occur during the process of acquiring a home, whether through sale, lease/rental. Usually, home discrimination transpires between the owner of the home and the occupant-to-be. When a home is being leased or rented, the landlord will usually place potential renters through a procedure known as tenant screening, which is used to assess if a person is worthy of tenancy. Though tenant screening is a legal practice, if discrimination becomes a factor, landlords can be subject to legal ramifications. For homes being purchased, buyers may go through a similar screening procedure in order to purchase the home and receive necessary loans. In either case, home discrimination, which can surface as a product of race, sex, age, or other qualities, violates laws on both a state and nationwide scale.
