Racial Discrimination In The Workplace

Racial discrimination in the workplace is a type of discrimination that involves a person being treated unfairly in the workplace, either by the employer or another employee. As of 1964, the Civil Rights Act prohibits an employer from discriminating against employees on grounds of race, being that race does not affect an employee's ability to accomplish his/her duties. Within the Civil Rights Act, Title VII explicitly states that it is illegal for an employer to terminate, refuse to hire, discipline, harass, or give unequal pay to a person because of their race. Title VII not only also prohibits employers from discriminating against minorities, but also extends to prevent discrimination against whites, in the sense that employers cannot implement overzealous affirmative action programs. In addition to the federal legislation, states and local municipalities may have their own laws barring race discrimination in the workplace. If a person has been discriminated against because of his/her race, they should consider speaking with a lawyer for help. Damages can occur if an employer is determined to have discriminated on the basis of race.
